1.11 Dig XX

“The greatest rock ’n’ roll documentary of all time.”

Näinkin nöyrästi Nirvanan ja Foo Fightersin Dave Grohl kuvailee elokuvan alussa tätä Ondi Timonerin kulttiklassikoksi jo muodostunutta dokumenttielokuvaa bändeistä The Brian Jonestown Massacre ja The Dandy Warhols. Dig!

Vuonna 1996 molemmat The Brian Jonestown Massacre ja The Dandy Warhols ovat nousevia yhtyeitä läpimurron partaalla.

Siinä missä alkuperäisversiossa kuultiin voice-over Taylor-Taylorilta, uusi versio kattaa myös tarinasta toisen puolen. Ääneen pääsee tällä kertaa myös BJM:n tamburiinin soittaja ja Newcomben uskollisin seuraaja Joel Gion. Dig! XX on kaoottinen elokuva kaoottisista ihmisistä ja sitäkin kaoottisimmista bändeistä.

“The greatest rock ’n’ roll documentary of all time.”

Receiving such humble words from Dave Grohl of Nirvana and Foo Fighters, Ondi Timoner’s music documentary Dig! has garnered a cult-like following. Dig! XX is not the first time we meet The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols on the silver screen. In fact, it is an extended and recut anniversary version of the film simply known as Dig! The original version had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004 where the film received the Documentary Grand Jury Prize.

In 1996 both of the bands, The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols, were on the verge of a breakthrough. Dig! follows them for the seven following years as they are trying to deal with the collision of art and commerce. The plot-like element of the documentary is the love-hate-relationship of the two eccentric yet self-absorbed frontmen. The creative madness of BJM’s Anton Newcombe and calculated charm of Courtney Taylor-Taylor from the Dandys cause friction between the men but the mutual respect never disappears.

Following bohemians like them, you can not avoid the moments of pure danger and ecstasy. However, in XX you can see the effect of the by-gone decades which bring a whole new layer of introspection to the film.  The original cut contains a voice-over by Taylor-Taylor but in this version we also get to hear the other side of the story. It features a brand new narration by BJM’s tambourine player and Newcombe’s most faithful bandmate: Joel Gion. Dig! XX is a chaotic film about chaotic people and even more chaotic bands.
